"Ch 5, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 5 (counts as first hdc, ch 2), *hdc in center of ring,
ch 2; rep from * 6 more times, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 to
join—8 ch-2 sps.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), hdc in
same st as join, ch 3, *sk ch-2 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 3;
rep from * around, end with sl st in top of beg ch-3 to join—
8 ch-3 sps.
Rnd 3: Sl st in next hdc and in next ch-3 sp, ch 7, *sc in next
ch-3 sp, ch 7; rep from * around, end with sl st in first ch of
first ch-7—8 ch-7 sps."

This is part of crochet pattern , I don't understand the end of Rnd2 and the beginning of Rnd3, what does top of beg ch-3 mean? Btw, does ch-3 means a chain loop consisting of 3 chains? Thank you.

You will be making a slip stitch into the very top stitch of the ch 3, and yes, ch 3 is a chain consisting of 3 chains. It can be a loop or just a spacer like in a granny square.

EDIT: I have just followed your directions and made what you are making. You will be slip stitching into the 2nd chain ( middle one ). You go thru both loops. Hope this explains things a bit clearer.

The end of round 2

(keep in mind the beginning chain three for this round) after your final stitch you will insert your hook into the 3rd stitch you made in the beginning of this round then pull through the loops ...slip stitch) - when you complete this round you should have 8 of the chain three spaces throughout this round

Beginning of round 3

you insert your hook into your first hal double crochet of round 2 and make a slip stitch, then make another slip stitch in the first chain 3 opening (not into the stitch but under and around the chain) then chain 7 and make a single crochet under and around the next chain 3 opening....continue and connect your rounds and you should have 8 of the chain 7 spaces when you finish the round

Hope this helps

It should be the first chain stitch you made. You're making a circle that will become the center of the beanie.
