I've been crocheting for a few years, and I'm interested in learning how to knit. I love how knit cables look, but I want to know how difficult it is to do, successfully.

When I learned knitting I found cables easier than learning lace stitches and yarn overs and bizarre letter combinations like psso and ssk and yo k in bk lp. In fact I think cables were one of the easiest things I learned when I started knitting. It was easier than learning how to properly cast off! You'll need to knit a practice sampler to get the hang of working cables, but once learned they are very easy. Just pay attention to the direction of the cable, meaning which stitches go under and which go over. That's the most difficult part.

Not difficult at all for someone who's used to following written directions. You'll need a couple of stich holders (they look like big plastic safety pins) which hold the cable stiches BEHIND your work until it's time to carry them forward and cross them over.
For example:
OOOXXXSSSOOO - Starting pattern with the X's and S's being the rows to be cabled (crossed)
OOOXXXSSSOOO - More of the same
OOO SSSOOO - At some point, you will be told to put the X stitches on a stitch holder
OOOSSSXXXOOO - Now, when you get where the X's were, pick up the S's and knit them first, then knit the stiches off the stitch holder. The X's and S's have switched places. You've created a cable!
Later, the pattern will have you hold the S stitches and knit the X's first, and so on, back and forth. It's kind of like braiding hair.

Nothing is hard to do... when you know how! All it takes is some correct instruction, a little practice, and there you are! Cables are just knitting stitches out of their normal sequence. Really, that is all there is to it. There are several different methods that one can use, but they all do the basic same thing... knit some stitches out of order from the others... and you get a cable. The hardest things are often the simplest to do.
Get a lesson, and you are off. But if you don't have basic knitting skills, it is going to be a lot harder to do them the first day! You should get your basic knitting skills up to speed first; then do cables.

in case you opt to cheat slightly you may desire to purchase the two a around or a rapidly knitting loom to apply as against knitting needles. you merely loop the yarn around each spike or spoke that's sticking up. Make a hand-crafted loom or pay $200.00 for an honestly knitting device..
