I really want to make my own clothes but I don't have a sewing machine and I can't afford one. I know how to use a sewing machine though, and I also, sort of, know how to sew by hand, but my mum knows how to so she can teach me. But do you need a sewing machine to make clothes? Like dresses and things...

No, you do not need a sewing machine.

A sewing machine cannot make stitches any different than what you can do....they are just faster.

You have a teacher, so don't worry. Be happy that you have a mum who knows how to sew!

I beg to differ from others on this. In all practicality you need a sewing machine to make your clothes. If you search around you should be able to find a used one that works and there are some sold at pretty low prices at Walmart. I teach sewing and two of my students bought machines there. Many times there are also relatives like grandmothers who have machines they don't use and they give them away to a grandchild learning to sew. Maybe you have a relative who has one? When I first was learning to sew my family did not have much "extra" money, my parents found a used machine for me at a reasonable price. Your parents may be able to help you purchase one.

You definitely don't need a sewing machine to make almost anything, but it is faster. As mentioned, check out Craigslist, freecycle.org, sewing machine repair shops, etc., or just buy an inexpensive machine ($70-100 or so) if you want to use a machine.

If you want to sew by hand, I'd suggest checking out some of the boards and sub-boards at Craftster.org.

The ones involving clothing often have projects done by hand (and some of the other boards too). Most of the members are teens or young women some of whom also don't have sewing machines.

All the *main* craft forums at Craftster are listed down on the right on this page:

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php

Click especially on the ones called:

...Clothing (especially perhaps "Reconstructed Clothing")

...Sewing in General

...Toys, Plaything, Plushies, Dolls

...Home Sweet Home

(If you also join Craftster--free--you can ask questions, etc.)

You don't NEED them, Seamstresses used to make clothes by hand before the machines were made or before people could afford them in their home. It will be very time consuming though. I would practice on some smaller things before you jumped to clothes so you have the chance to learn Precision with hand sewing.

Also check your local craigslist or yard sales for a sewing machines cheap, they'll really make your life a lot easier.

I sew a lot of miniatures. its like making a little doll house. i also make all of my own hair accessories, like flowers and bows. As someone else mentioned, embroidery is fun. use your imagination. you can also knit or crochet. mini hats are fun to do, all you need in a round pudding cup, cardboard, glue, needle and thread, and fabric of your choice. be creative. :)
