You could make a scrapbook, there are some very inspiring and inexpensive things at craft stores.

If you want something that can be hanged on the wall, you could make copies of photos of family members when they were babies and do some sort of a modern collage with modge podge.

You could get a sewing pattern from the store and make a bedding set, if you have a sewing machine.

If you knit, you can make little stuffed animals or a blanket/hat/socks.

What would YOU want made for you baby? Babies are easy. Just make sure your thought shows!

There are some really great patters out there for handmade stuffed animals and such - and quite a few stuffed animals are pretty straight forward and simple, while still looking like you did something hard. Thing is, with him a to-be-newborn, I'd be careful what I made and take into consideration choking hazards and such as that. Even if it's on the wall, accidents happen, and he'll be walking around before you know it.

Blankets are definitely really popular. Crocheting is easier than knitting, it seems. A quilt could be nice hanging on a wall - they don't have to be big, either, the nice thing about decorative quilts.

I also wouldn't recommend doing something that you've never done before- and if you do, have a few practice runs to work out kinks you may not know how to fix until a few practice runs.

If you sew, there are all kinds of gifts in the pattern books Simplicity and McCalls online and in fabric stores. Stuffed animals, nursery things, tote bags, baby totes, blankies, booties and on and on.

If you have no sewing skills, make some cute hand puppets. A glue gun and some felt will do that. There are also some crafts to make for baby with washcloths.

You can create a handmade keepsake box, baby sock roses to be given to the mother, clothes if you know how to sew, custom travel wipe containers and so much more. You can also find lots of ideas online.
