When my mom was pregnant with me, she made me a blanket. She crocheted it using a broom stick. My moms birthday is on March 21st and I want to make her a blanket that looks exactly like the one she made me. How hard is it to crochet a blanket and do you think its possible for me to make it by March 21st? I've never crocheted anything before.

My grandmother crocheted blankets all the time, it took her maybe two or three weeks? You have to crochet all the panels separately then sew them together and crochet around the outside, there are some really nice patterns and easy tutorials on Youtube. I would use a crochet hook though and not a broomstick! :)

Realistically, it's going to be hard to get a blanket done by March 21st if you've never crocheted. It takes a few projects to get the feel of it, and learn the different stitches, and get your tension even. BUT, I still think you should start, just not aim for the blanket for this particular birthday. Maybe next year you could tackle it. In the meantime, you could make her some dishcloths, and then maybe a scarf, and tell her you're working up to something really special (if it's a surprise, which it sounds like you want it to be). Good luck, and have fun. Crocheting is a very fulfilling and creative hobby, and is something you'll get pleasure from for years to come, as long as you don't overwhelm yourself by trying to do something too demanding right from the start.

What your mom made sounds like broom stick lace stitch which can be a bit tricky if you're just starting. But the stitch looks beautiful in a blanket or scarf.

Also depends on what kind of blanket (throw, bed spread, car blanket, baby blanket they have different sizes) and stitch you're going to use or if you want to sew squares together to make a blanket.

If you're a beginner then I would suggest starting out with an easy or beginner blanket pattern with out too many colour changes so you don't get too frustrated with the instructions. If you work on it every day you could get it done by then, but you would have to start on it asap. An experienced crocheter could get it done in a few weeks. You can have a look around at tutorials on you tube, they can teach you how to crochet.

When I first learned to crochet, all I made were afghans. I would do rows and rows of double crochet, making different patterns by varying the stripes/colors. I made afghans for everyone in my family in this way, so it is quite easy to crochet afghans even if you are a beginner. The great thing about making rows of the same stitch is that you don't need to figure out a foundation chain. Just make the chain as long as you want the afghan to be wide, then set to work, using your favorite stitch. I will say that this is not very exciting as it is just rows and rows of the same stitch. If you are one to get bored easily, you might want something more exciting. But it is definitely easy. If you are asking about Afghan stitch, that is a different sort of stitch, but I think still easy enough for a determined beginner.

Broomstick lace is made with a crochet hook and a dowel, or something like a broomstick handle. Here's a simple tutorial:

You can make it as large as you want, and add an edging if you like.
