I have a White sewing machine, the needle goes up and down but the thread does not make the loop that would pick up the bobbin thread. I have used the machine many times before but it has been at my moms for a couple years. I have tried changing the needle and the tension.

First, make sure you've got the bobbin correctly threaded, about 3" of thread tail hanging out of the case, and the bobbin case fully inserted.

Next:

Try rotating the needle 180 degrees and reinserting -- a common cause of this problem is that the needle is in backwards. You'll want about 4" of excess thread that you can hang on to while you try to form the loop that catches the bobbin thread. Also make sure you're turning the handwheel in the direction that would make the fabric feed from front to back in the machine.

If neither of those helps:

1) try a brand new needle, correctly oriented (even a bit of a bend in the needle can cause this problem)

2) Check the timing of your machine -- it should look like one of these two examples: http://sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing Machine Hook Timing.htm

You have threaded the machine incorrectly and the bobbin is not inserted correctly Get out your manual and look at the pictures or go online and check. The bobbin should click when set properly and the tail of bobbin thread pulled through the gate on the bobbin case.

Make sure the upper thread is of equal weight or heavier then bobbin thread. Make sure you have fed it through the tension bar properly and that you passed it through the needle in the correct direction.

Some needles thread front to back. Others right to left and some left to right.

Try one more quick fix - raise the presser foot each time you thread the machine.

When you thread the machine with the presser foot down, the tension function is closed and the top thread cannot enter.

No tension on the top thread and it is like a slippery, wet noodle.

Are you pulling the needle thread to the left while you wind the needle down? That is the way I have to do it for my machine.

Time to get out the manual and try threading it again. If you can't master threading properly on your own, the dealer who sold you the machine may be able to help. Some places give "how to use your new machine" lessons

The bobbin thread goes over the bobbin to the left. Turn the knob toward you instead of away. This should work.

I'd get out the manual, or look for it online. Its probably not threaded correctly.
