I started knitting a top-down v-neck cardigan last night. I've completed the collar and have begun the v-neck shaping but I'm very confused.

This part of the pattern reads:

Increase SHORT Row 1: K30, M1, K1, Place Marker #1, K1, M1, K8, M1, K1, Place Marker #2, K1, M1, K26, M1, K1, Place Marker #3, K1, M1, K8, M1, K1, Place Marker #4, K1, M1, SSK, K1, TURN.

Wrong Side SHORT Row 2: SL1, purl to Marker #1, slip Marker, P2, P2tog, P1, TURN.

Increase SHORT Row 3: SL1, *knit to one stitch before Marker, M1, K1, slip Marker, K1, M1; repeat from* 3 more times, knit to one stitch before the gap, SSK, K1, TURN.

Alright, Row 3 is where I got confused. I completed the instructions between the *'s once , however, at that point I've only slipped ONE marker, so I don't understand how I could repeat it 3 times.

(I hope I'm making sense)

Does it mean TURN the work and repeat? And then TURN and repeat again 3 times?

It means to repeat FROM * 3 more times (4 times in all) after which you will have slipped all 4 markers THEN work the last section (SSK,K1, TURN)

You have to increase each side of these 4 markers for the raglan shapings for the front, sleeves and back

On row 2 did you realise that marker #1 is the last marker on the needle NOT the first? in which case you have not worked enough sts to work row 3 and this is where you are confused.

hope this helps

This is another case where I dislike written instructions so much.. they don't make much sense at all. I prefer a chart, or a schematic diagram. I then can see the whole picture.

You may find it easier to make a little sketch of your cardigan. Place the markers where they are, write in number of stitches, and whatever else you need to make sense of this. You will see that you have placed FOUR markers...these mark the four corners where you are going to make the raglan shaping. You increase before and after the marker-- you have to do this at each marker, so a total of four times. The instructions explain the process for the first marker, and then you have to do the same thing again three more times at each of the other markers. So as you work along, when you come to the marker ("knit to one stitch before Marker"), do those same instructions again.

You do not do anything more than what is written there. Do not turn unless told to do so... follow the directions EXACTLY as they are written, word for word, and you will be alright. But I still like charts better.

You are decreasing at the raglan edge on right side rows. When 5 stitches remain you have just done a right side row so you need to work 1 row before the next decrease at the raglan edge. When you have 2 stitches left knit them together, cut the yarn leaving a few inches to sew in and pull yarn thru final loop so it does not unravel. The pattern will I guess tell you what to do with stitch on the safety pin at a later stage.

Wish I could be of more help. Did this pattern come off the internet? Sometimes they are not tested and have all kinds of kinks in them. I'm working on a cardigan too. It was a pattern I downloaded. I have found several burps in the instructions. My only suggestion is to check on patternreview.com, click the message board tab and scroll down to the knitting thread. You can ask your question there and generally get a great response. There are some top notch knitters on that site.
