I might get a sewing machine in a few months but until then what other things can I do to practice sewing? Would sewing by hand be a good start? And what things should I buy (besides a sewing machine).

Here is a list - http://sewing.org/html/guidelines.html You can find a Singer kit in sewing stores that contain most, if not all of the basics.

You will also need a few scraps of cotton and a spool of thread to test drive the sewing machine to see how it works before you actually sew a project. There will be a manual with the machine that will take you step by step from beginning to end - don't skip or you will miss out on important information.

learn sewing terms. learn how to read a pattern. learn about fabric. Go to your public library for beginning sewing books.

You could perhaps practice some hand-sewing but once you get a machine you won't really be doing that in general.
