Trying to make a hat here are a few rows. I thought I understood the ch-sp thing, but then I came upon 5 ch - sp and I'm confused:

Row 13: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sc, (sk ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 sc) across, end sk last ch-1 sp, sc in last sc – 17 (19, 21) sc.
Row 14: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) across – 8 (9, 10) ch-1 sp.
Row 15: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc) across – 5 ch-1 sp.

If you mean this at the end of row 15

5 ch-1 sp.

then I would take it to mean that at the end of row 15 you should have 5 spaces made up of 1ch.

Row 13 ended up with a total of either 17 /19 /21 sc's

Row 14 ended up with a total of either 8 / 9/ 10 chain 1 spaces.

ch-5 sp means Chain 5 Space. It is the space that you created in the first row right after the star. Instead of crocheting into the top of the next sc you will make your stitch in the space created by that chain. When you are making it(row 1) a pattern refers to it as CH 5. but when you are making a stitich into it in a later row(row 2) the pattern will refer to it as a ch(some number) space

Hope that helps you , Good luck.
