I'm new to crocheting and I'm trying to understand this scarf pattern for a beginner.

Chain 140

ROW 1: Double crochet in 4th chain from hook, *double crochet in next chain, 2 double crochet in next chain; repeat from * across.

ROW 2: Chain 3, turn double crochet in same space, *double crochet in next 2 double crochet, 2 double crochet in next double crochet; repeat from * across.

ROW 3: Chain 3, turn, double crochet in same space, *double crochet in next 3 double crochet, 2 double crochet in next double crochet; repeat from * across.

ROW 4: Chain 3, turn, double crochet in same space, *double crochet in next 4 double crochet, 2 double crochet in next double crochet; repeat from * across. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

I know how to do basic stitches, DC, HDC, CH, SC, TR, YO, etc. What I don't understand is what it means to "2 double crochet into next chain." or "double crochet in next 3 double crochet, and 2 double crochet in the next double crochet."

Any help is appreciated!!

2 double crochet into next chain means that in the next chain space, you make 2 double crochets, both in the same space.

double crochet in next 3 double crochet, means that when you are working on that row, in the next three double crochet's in a row you make a double crochet.

2 double crochet in the next double crochet. means that in the next double crochet, you make 2 double crochets in the same space.

good luck and congrats on your initiative!

Knitting/crochet: it's a little like saying, I can make a killer stir fry so why can't I bake a cake? LOL You are working in the round. If you haven't mastered working in rows, It might be a good idea to try that first. But, let's assume you have learned rows. Chain 2: look at the stitches. There will be two 'free loops' and one loop still on the hook. Insert the hook into the first stitch, the one closest to the knot. yarn over and pull a loop through. Now there are two loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through both loops. You just did one single crochet in the first chain. Do that 5 more times, all in the same chain. This will bring your work around to a circle. It will probably have you slip stitch into the first single crochet or mark the first stitch to keep track of your rows. Hope that helped. :o)

Hi,

First of all, im not sure if you are british or american as that changes your pattern some what.

A dc-double crochet on an american pattern is a treble on an english pattern so if you are british, using an american pattern swap every "dc" for a "tr" -treble stitch. An american dc is a treble to a british person.

Otherwise as follows:- in english conversion

a "chain" or "ch" is a chain stitch which is the stitch you use at the beginning of the project.

"2 double crochet into next chain." means 2 double crochet into the next chain stitch

so as in ROW 1: Double crochet in 4th chain from hook, *double crochet in next chain, 2 double crochet in next chain; repeat from * across. is the same as- 1 Double crochet in 4th stitch from hook, then 2 double crochet in next stitch, * you repeat this along row.

"double crochet in next 3 double crochet, is same as "one double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches(which are double crochets) " or simply "1 dc in each of next 3 stitches"

and 2 double crochet in the next double crochet." is the same as 2 double crochets in the same next stitch which should be a double crochet stitch too. or simply "2 dc in next st"

Hope this helps
