I want to start crocheting. But don't know where to begin or what to get. I am a total newbie to it.

Can anyone suggest what I may need and where I can learn it from?

I am also looking for a begginners book?. Can anyone reccommend one to me?

Hiya,

I taught myself crochet, i used the 'dummies' guide. It was really helpfull, and starts at the very begginng. Some books have the generic quick picture guide to the stitches, but this book really is for the raw novice.

I now consider myself an expert in crochet, but still use this book!

Get some cheap wool and a variety pack of hooks, you can upgrade once you know what you want.

Ah, personally I learnt to crochet from youtube. Its perfect - you can watch a pro and pause the video when you need to.

Its probably worth investing in a book that has plenty of fairly simple crochet patterns because once you've learnt the basics from youtube, practise makes perfect - personally i like making little toys and bought "Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet" - off amazon i think. The projects are small but look good once completed. There are a few pattern websites scattered here and there but its always nice to have a decent choice.

What crochet hook and wool you buy depends on what you want to make, but to make the stuff in the book above, ^^ I use a 4mm crochet hook and 'double knit' acrylic wool. The wool was so cheap - about 99p a ball.

Don't go for the plastic crochet hooks - I find they dont slide over the wool and I managed to snap mine...Metal ones are definitely best. To stuff things you make you will need some poly-fill which can also be bought really cheaply.

So basically, you will need: youtube, pattern, wool, hook.

The public library has some good books for beginners but you tube has some helpful videos also.

Here is a link for a tutorial on crochet. Get a size 5 hook and some yarn and practice each set of stitches in the tutorial then move on to the next one. Familiarize yourself with the abbreviations so you will be able to read patterns later. This link has everything you will need to know.

There are lots of places and books with good instructions. Careful about Yootoob... some of them are very poorly done, and some are clearly very wrong!

You should check your local yarn store, or community centre, or even a neighbour to see about getting some instruction. Sometimes you need a live person to show you, and to watch that you are doing it correctly. Once you have a good start, you can learn by yourself. But if you get a bad habit, it's most difficult to get that corrected later. Taking a beginner class is the best thing you can do.

Hello,

If you have a craft store like Michaels where you are, they sometimes have classes. Also, they have beginner crochet kits they sell. Those kits have everything you need to get started if you are willing to teach yourself. You can probably buy a kit online, as well.

I recommend starting off with the kits, and also going to youtube and watching crochet videos. You tube is an excellent source.

Thanks.

I can knit a dream but couldn't crochet to save my life. I started out with a size 6 needle and some odd wool and youtube. It sounds odd, but it's like one to one tuition and you can learn the stitches as you go. Threadbanger are american but to see how it is done and learn they are very good. under the video type in how to crochet and go from there.

I discovered whilst i replaced into 7 by checking a e book out of the library. do no longer start up with the smallest hooks, i began out on an H hook with yarn. Make chains till now each thing (purely a string of chain stitches) till you get your stress consistant. then you definitely can artwork as much as unmarried crochet, then double, 0.5 double, and then treble. do no longer start up a undertaking like a headband proper away till you realize you may make consistant stitches, purely make swatches and squares. once you're optimistic, then you definitely can address a headband it is straightforward, you purely make rows persistently till this is as long as you like.
