Hello, I am knitting a sweater but I am little confused with what to do now. Here are the directions:
Bind off at each edge every 2 rows: 5 sts 1 time, 4 sts 1 time

I can bind off the first 5 sts but when i get to the end I can only bind off 4 sts and then there is one left at the end, and I have no way of getting the yarn back to the sts on the other needle.

The easiest way to do this sort of bind-off is to knit all the way to the end and turn. You bind off those first five stitches on the pearl row by pearling two stitches together, similar to how you bind off a knitted stitch. Or you can slip the first stitch, pearl the second, and slip the first over that second one. Then you pearl the third, and slip the second stitch over it, continuing this way until you have bound off the five stitches. Then you complete two rows, and will bind off four stitches on the knit side, and four stitches on the return pearl side. I'm assuming you are doing a stocking stitch, with a knit one side and a pearl on the other. Yeah, the directions are a bit confusing for a newbie knitter I agree. They don't actually mean you have to do the bind off on the same row.

here is what you do.

just before you start the row you simply bind off 5 stitches then work whatever stitch to the end. turn your work and then bind off 4 stitches and work to the end.

try posting the link to the pattern and ill see what is happening.

the instructions are not written well for an inexperienced knitter to understand.

Here it is in a simplified way -

cast off 5sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.

now cast off 4sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.

Good luck with your sweater.
