Question:
Problems with lion brand "Fun Fur" yarn.?

I bought Lion Brand fun fur yarn to make a soft "fuzzy" type scarf. Generally I love their yarn, but this particular yarn has been very difficuly to work with. It slides off the needles very easily, (and I have tried both knitting and crocheting with it. no luck with either.) One of my biggest complaints is that if I try to pull out my stitches to redo something. Its so tangled it knots easily and I cannot undo what I have already done. So I cut that part off and lost the yarn. Has anyone else used this kind and have you had any luck with it? If you have worked with this particular type of yarn before, any tips would be appreciated.

Yea.... my favorite type of question - YARN!!!

I don't try to work with it all by itself, I usually use a sports or baby weight yarn along with my project (holding the two strands together)in a neutral color or color that blends right in so that it disappears into the craft. You may have to play with gauge and different needle sizes on your pattern because you are changing the ease of the work. But, I just find out I loose less of my own hair if I pair it with something else rather than try to work with it all on its own. Hope this helps.

When I knit with the Fun Fur yarn I use Bamboo knitting needles. They add a little more friction=more control. Or I take a worsted weight (plain) yarn and put it with the Fun Fur, knitting the two together at the same time. Using a big size knitting needle also helps, like a size 11-13. I think it is classified as a bulky weight yarn. When I have completed the project I gently use a crochet hook to comb along the rows to encourage the furry string to fluff out to the outside. I haven't tried crocheting with it (sounds like trouble to me :).

While I have not yet tried it, I have a skein somewhere, my co waorker uses it all the time. she makes gorgeus sweaters and scarves with it and she uses it on the cuffs of gloves.

When she uses it, she uses a matching color of worsted weight yarn with it. ow she uses primarily the red Heart super savers with it but I have seen her use the Caron Sijmply soft and I like the results much better with the Caron. she tried it alone and had it was really neat until hse made a mistake. When she tried to frog (rip it, rip it) she ended up having to cut it as did you becaue of the tangles. Now she only uses it with another. It does not seem to change the weight of the item she is knitting as the Fun Fur is just so thin. I actually believe it shoud have a warning on it that says 'Do not use alone but with a worsted weight at the same time working both strands as one'. LOL

With the gloves, she knits the gloves out of the Caron and then she adds the fun Fur in with the Caron for the cuffs. than she knits a matching scarf using both the Caron and the Fun Fur. Actually, I wish she would make a set for me! They are gorgeous!

Oh, we did figure something out though, the yarn is more of a neutral backgroudnd when mixed with the fun fur as in it doesn't show much through all of the fur fuzzies. I like the bright multi colored furs that she uses best with the solid underneath. She did one that had a variegated yarn with a neutral fun fur and it did not look as nice in my opinion.

PS. She only knits but I imagine crochet would be much the same.

when i worked with that yarn i couldnt see the stitches at all, the yarn could easily slide off my needles and i tried to crochet with the yarn with no luck. when i would frog (rip it, rip it) the yarn would just wind up one big knot.

this yarn is considered a bulky weight yarn and requires large needles. maybe that will help with your problem. a tip that i heard is to use brightly colored needles to see the stitches better and to see your stitches i saw someone use a light source. I hope that you have better times with this yarn.

I've never had problems with it sliding off the needles, but it always tangles, you can't frog it at all...

I have had good luck combining it with a light worsted weight as a 2 stranded project, and it doesn't make the finished item too thick (since the fun fur main strand is so thin)...
