The only time you use safety pins is for basting a quilt. This holds the layers in place as the layers are then quilted. The pins are removed as required for the stitching.

Buy the thinnest straight pins you can find for sewing. They will easily slip through the fabric and not make large holes in the fabric.

Never machine sew over a pin as they can break, break the needle or bend the pin down into the feed dogs and possibly cause damage to the machine or bend the needle.

Not the best substitute, but it would work in an emergency. Safety pins are generally thicker than sewing pins, so will leave larger holes in the fabric.

in an emergency you may use to pin a hem.
