Using a Typical Butane Lighter like this http://www.hookah-shisha.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1283&idaffiliate=284 is fine. It's best to use a Butane Torch not just a butane lighter. Difference being one looks like a propane torch and the other a disposable lighter. Otherwise it won't ignite fast enough and you it will take longer for the coal to be fully lit.
Best bet is a stove! People use Propane Torches like these http://www.bernzomatic.com/products/torches/professional-torches.aspx But I am always afraid of melting my tongs. I would use the stove in your kitchen or buy a portable one like this: http://www.hookah-shisha.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1284&idaffiliate=284
Even with Quicklights A regular lighter or matches never cut it for me.

Yeah you can, I just prefer long stem matches in case the charcoal decides to spark. Whichever provides you the safest light, sometimes its a long match or a "safety lighter".
