Beginner-can knit and purl and have difficulty but can cast off and make seams by hook or by crook.
I have checked out many library knitting books-since no one else is taking them out I figure now is the time to get started before I forget the few things I learned in class and knitting circle in winter Most classes and circles are taking a breather now for summer-cant find any in my area now

Think of something you would like to make. Now is a great time to get started on Christmas presents. Most people don't like to knit big heavy afghans in the hot summer. Smaller projects are preferred. But if you have air conditioning, why not? One thing I like to do every now and then is just scout out all the free patterns on the internet and get some inspiration. Here is a great website that has lots of advice for beginners and links to free patterns for knitters:

http://knitting.about.com/od/learntoknit/a/begin_knit.htm

And here are some of my own favorite free knitting pattern sites, when I feel like window-shopping:

http://www.knittingonthenet.com/ (She used to be the leader of the about.com knitting site and has written a dummies book for knitters)

Maybe you would like to tackle a sweater for yourself. Or learn to make a few dishcloths in a cotton worsted. How about a couple of scarves for friends for presents. Golf club covers? Something nice for your house? Go to your craft store or Wal-mart and look at the yarn. See what you like and what colors turn you on. You need some inspiration, then it will all flow!

Good luck!

First off, here is an excellent source for improving your knitting: http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/

It has videos on how to do most techniques from beginning to advanced and I have foudn it very helpful when I come across something I don't know/remember how to do.

My plans for the summer are knitting lots of socks! Here is an easy basic rib sock pattern that is really well written: http://www.spunmag.com/article/060421socks

If you go to a local yarn store they can show you everything you need as well. They will probably even have lessons going on.

Othewise I would stick to small things like dishcloths or a scarf. I'm just finishing up a sweater right now and it's getting way too warm to have it on my lap!

Visit http://knittingpatterncentral.com for lists and lists of free patterns.

Good luck!

I'm making a summer wrap, using 4ply sock yarn. Tis is essentially just a super wide scarf, and you can embellish it with any pattern that you want, or feel that you can do. There are some great patterns on Knitty.com for just this. And no seaming!

I always think that summer knits are nicer and easier to do, as you can create beautiful lace garments - Don't be put off trying lace, remember if you can knit and purl you can do any pattern!

Smaller items are always a good idea (socks, hats), so you don't have all the bulk of a garment.

I'm currently on a lace kick, and knitting with lace weight yarn doesn't make you overheat. Don't be intimidated, lace is just knits and purls.
