Many years ago I saw a circular quilt made up entirely of ties - with an appliqued heart in the center and a few 'crazy' patches - probably to cover up spots. It was draped over a hammock in a very picturesque garden. This was in the 80's so it was some very colorful ties. It was inspirational - I did not know enough about quilting at the time, but I recall it looked as if they had just opened, ironed out the ties and sewn them all together - small end towards the center - until it completed a circle - may have been some material added to help complete it. It was fabulous and I have always wanted to collect enough ties to duplicate this. It was definitely a conversation piece.

Really, you can make it out of anything. If it's a lightweight fabric, you can back it with stiffener. If it's a heavy fabric, you can line it with a fine lightweight fabric. Smooth cotton, silk in many weights, tweed, corduroy - whatever effect you're looking for can be made. And remember, bow ties are not just for men's formalwear.

Silk will give you the most elegant bow tie. Cotton will be ok for a more casual look. Nothing too heavy or your bow will be clown like, not elegant.

Some fabrics will be too thick to be tied without huge knots, etc, so one important thing is that the fabric is usually cut on the bias so it will be able to stretch and bit and "turn corners" without being horribly stiff. Most fabrics will need to have interfacing of some kind too.
If you're making a permanently-tied bow tie, you might be able to make it from more materials?
