Question:
How can I make a pirate hook?
2008-11-11 10:38:09 UTC
Ok so I am in a production of Peter Pan. We have no props dept to speak of so I need to know how I can make a metal hook, where I can get designs or something that will help. I stress metal not plastic and I am UK resident so the web site offering custom made ones isn't helpful at $250. I have access to materials and equipment just can't seem to find any plans or designs. Input appreciated.

The first duty of props is to see that what they produce is no danger to the cast. That said,..draw a hook on on a piece of paper, graphs paper perferably. When you are sure that you have your proportions correct, considering the hand and arm of the actor, then using wire bend it to fit the shape. You will need to do this four times but do not break the wire as this will produce a sharp edge. You now use the wire to form the base on which you will construct a papier mache hook.

Tear paper into small rectangular strips and soak it in glue. Wind it around the wite until it assumes to correct shape. You can build up this material just as if it were plasticine. Allow this to dry gradually, although you can aid this process with a hair dryer. While this is happening make another because it always pays to have one in reserve. Then when it is dry paint the surface with varnish. Let this dry.

Paint your hook with metal paint. ICI do a very realistic one and you will find that the paint comes in useful for other things.

To keep the hook in the hand: bend the wire around a pencil or a piece of wood. This will form a horizontal grip which the actor can use.

Anything else will be expensive and complicated and not guranteed to work. Put the hook inside of the costume sleeve and sow this up. The effect is improved if Hook has "lace" edges to his sleeves.

Even this hook will be dangerous unless the actor takes care.

Have a nice play!

Get a large shiny coat hook that's about the size you want / need. You may have to cut it down, or cut off part of the hook, or bend it to suit your need. If you have to bend it, be sure it's not made of some cast metal, or it will break easily rather than bend. Look for seams or mold lines to indicate if it was cast. A hook with threads on the end so that it screws into the wall would be very useful - see below.

Make something to serve as a cup at the end of your arm to cover your hand. A large cup may work well, or maybe a small bowl. Metal would be nice, as it could be polished, but plastic could work as well. Drill a hole in the bottom of the cup or bowl, and poke the hook through it. If the hook has a threaded end to it, thread it into the side of a wood dowel - this will give you a handle to hold the entire assembly in your hand, and keep it in place while on stage.

Step1 Cut a 5 inch sheet of aluminum foil and roll it unto itself, making a wand-like stick of foil. Shape the Hook. It should look like a clothes hanger hook, so if you have trouble shaping it, just use one to mimmick the shape. Tape the "bottom" of the hook (where the hand will be holding it)

Step2 Cut a small gash in the middle of the bottom of the bag, just enough for the hook to pass through.

Step3 Put the hook in the bag and pass the bottom through the gash. While you hold it, tape it safely to the bottom of the bag (the "hook" part is hidden now insde the bag)

Step4 Turn the bag inside out

If you want to start a woodworking project, you need all the necessary information, including schematics, blueprints, materials lists, dimensions etc. That is where Teds Woodworking comes in. The plans are clearly drawn and there're step-by-step explainations of how the plan should be done and put together. Go here https://tr.im/QTFpq

There are several other sites whose collection of plans have the dimensions totally wrong without any indication of parts lists, material lists or the tools needed. If you're one of those people who have bought plans like this in the past, Teds Woodworking will change your perception.

i would use an old coat hanger, cut down and bent into shape, the cut/rip newspaper and do paper mac-he and build up to the shape. simple and easy way.

Use a simple mixture of flour and water. Mix one part flour with about 2 parts of water until you get a consistancy like thick glue. Add more water or flour as necessary. Mix well to get out all the bumps. Add a few tablespoons of salt to help prevent mold!

here are some ideas to form shapes............

Cardboard - Corrugated cardboard is great for bases to projects; and lightwweight cardboard, like from cereal boxes, works well for details.

Chicken Wire - Use this as a base for large projects. How about making a paper mache dinosaur!

Masking Tape - Great for holding all the other things together while you apply the paper mache.

Newspaper - Besides being a key ingredient in holding your paper mache creation together, you can use it for creating details. Try rolling it to make an arm or leg, or crumple it up to make smaller parts!

Shoe Boxes - Cover with paper mache to make a fancy box, or use as a base for a bigger project.

Toilet Tissue and Paper Towel Rolls - Great for adding details like arms and leg

Create your paper mache form and prepare your desired paper mache paste.

Tear newspaper into strips.

Dip one piece of newspaper at a time into prepared paper mache paste.

Hold the strip over the paste bowl and run it through your fingers to squeeze off excess paste.

Stick the newspaper strip over the form you want to paper mache, and smooth it down with your fingers.

Completely cover your creation with a layer of newspaper strips. They should all be over-lapping.

After one layer is applied, let it dry about 24 hours.

Add another layer of newspaper strips and let dry another 24 hours.

Repeat this process until you get the desired effect, but you should have at least three layers.

Paint, decorate and proudly display your creation!

Tips:

Tear the newspaper into strips -- do not cut it!

Be generous when dipping the newspaper strips into the paste -- you want each piece thoroughly saturated!

Let each layer dry completely before adding another.

How about using something like the top of a coat hanger and using papier mache to increase the size so it stands out?!
