Check out all the lessons and examples of simple plushies at the Craftster.org site. They'll be in the board called Toys, Dolls and Playthings, and the lessons will be primarily in the sub-board called *Completed Projects*:

I've made many little stuff animals with different materials.

The once I like the most are either amigurumi (crocheted stuff animals), felt, and fabric remnants from the fabric stores! I've always used hypoallergenic stuffing (since I don't know who's gonna take them from me).

Materials I've used:

Crochet needles

Yarns

Stuffing

Needle

Thread (matching or contrast)

material for stuff animal of your choice

embellishments of your choice (ribbons, bells, buttons, beads...)

The patterns for the amigurumi are kinda self made if you know how to crochet in circles with single chains, and the cotton stuff animals are kinda guess works from deciphering how an animal would look like... (lots of guess work) but patterns for everything can be found online or in stores!

Good luck!

Depends upon the animal you want to make. Try fake suede or cotton velvet for washability, but animals can be made of printed cottons, fake fur, anything. It should be washable, as should the stuffing. You can find patterns online and from companies like Butterick and McCalls and Simplicity. You can also make animals by knitting or crocheting, and there are lots of patterns for those, too.
