Personally, I think "money trees" are kind of tacky and impersonal because it doesn't leave much of a memento for the couple to look back at. But if you must make one, here are a couple ideas.

You could buy an artificial tree (a small ficus or something) which you could probably find inexpensively at a thrift shop, or you could also find a nice tree branch and "plant" it in a clay flower pot using either potting soil or plaster of paris (which would keep it secure and be much less potentially messy). If you want the branch, you might consider getting some artificial greenery to add to it so that it looks more tree-like. Then, if you are using bills, fan-fold them and attach them to the branches with paper clips, rubber bands or string. These will resemble leaves and blend in with what is already there. If you want to do coins, use transparent tape to stick a loop of string to the back of the coin and hang it so it dangles from a branch. Use the shiniest coins you can find because it looks pretty that way.

The best thing about using an artificial plant/tree is that the couple then has a little something to decorate their first home with as well, and will think of you whenever they see it.

I've seen it three different ways. 1. Buy a specially created one at a department store or craft store like Michaels. 2. Use a small tree (I've seen a bonsai), fold the bills like a fan, attach in the middle of the bill with a paperclip, and place any change given on top of the dirt in the pot. 3. Do the same as #2, only with a small dead branch. The fanned "leaves" of money look like greenery. This was really pretty, and didn't harm anything. You could also add tiny bows of the chosen bridal colors to the tree for an added effect. Also, if you get no change, you could place little chocolates or mints (wrapped) for a little extra. Good luck!
