You have what is called a V nickel but the correct name is Liberty Head 1883-1912. The bust is of Liberty and is not the same as the bust of the Statue of Liberty. The word LIBERTY is on a band on the head. If you can not read it then coin grades good or lower and is worth around $4.25. If some letters are legible grade is very good then around $8. If all letters are legible but weak the grade is fine $18. The coin then jumps in value as more detail shows such as hair. As for PCGS being #1 in grading that is a matter of opinion and not fact. Using ebay as a guide for pricing is okay only when other guides may not be available such as tokens or medals. Auction prices very to much.

The visibility of Liberty is not what determines the condition (which determines the value), it's the amount of DETAIL visible on Liberty. If the word Liberty on Liberty's headdress is full and complete, it's at least a Very Fine. The #1 coin grader, PCGS, lists a VF30 at $45 but realistically, market price is closer to the $25 to $30 range. Most of these coins that you can readily see on eBay are in the About Good (AG) to Good range, and they're going in the $3 to $8 range, regardless of what someone on here with a Red Book at their fingertips will tell you. Last time I checked, Red Book wasn't buying coins. People on eBay are buying and selling all the time, which is a demonstration of true market value.

its original value: 5 cents because it is really not that old, its rarity is low, many people have coins from the 1800s.
