I find it hard to find gifts for my mother on xmas.. I had an idea to get her a jewellery making kit... I think it would be something she would enjoy for many reasons.

I see alot of jewellery making kits on ebay which im not sure about. I know she would enjoy making jewellery for her "ladys nights" out so I dont want to buy tacky kit with tacky beads.

I was thinking maybe it would be better value to just making the kit up myself rather than buying ready made kits from ebay.

I need to know what would be the essentials of the kit as in tools and the main type of beads needed. Also any nice extras that would be nice to throw in.

Thanks

You will first need a container to organize everything. I suggest a multi compartment tackle box from the sporting goods department at your local Wal Mart. You can also pick up a set of jewelry tools there that would be appropriate for a beginner and inexpensive.

I have a copy of an ebook for beginning beaders that I can email to you. You can print the book out and take it to a Mailboxes Etc. store and they can bind it for you so it's like a real book.

Other essentials will include but are not limited to the following:

Swarovski crystal beads

Sterling Silver or Goldfilled spacers

Seed beads make great spacers too

Accuflex 49 strand wire for stringing the beads

Stretch Magic or the equivalent for stretchy bracelets

crimp beads

toggle clasps or lobster claw clasps

jump rings or split rings

ear wires

head pins and eye pins

Swarovski Crystal Pendants

Bails for the pendants

basic round czech glass beads - inexpensive and good for practicing with

There are so many beads and findings on the market, your Mom will love this gift! Beading is very addictive! If you need any more suggestions or help of any kind you can contact me through the ask seller a question link on any of my auctions. http://www.allthatglitterscrystalbeads.com

This is a good resource. They have the basic techniques plus you can order beads or get patterns. They have several patterns online for free plus a great catalog. If you look at the patterns you can see the types of jewelry she tends to wear and will know better what types of beads to include in your gift.

My opinion is the pliers are the most useful investment/tool. They can be purchased in a pack at most craft stores or you can buy them individually. I have the basic pink ones from Wal-Mart I do believe.

I think it's a great idea. Appropriate for any aged mom.

You really should look at/ask this question on craftster.com - you won't get a better answer anywhere else. They are the gods of this stuff, and the replies are quick.

They even have the only "click on" ads that I have ever bought anything through. Very impressive.
