What does stitch double notched edge mean, and what is the difference between a single and a double notched edge. I'm a sewing novice and all this wording is very confusing. Thanks for any infomation you can provide.

When you cut the pattern, the little black triangles on the the lines are notches (you should cut them outwards so as not to slip and cut into the fabric where you seam needs to be, or use a dressmakers pencil to draw them on). One triangle is a single notch, two is a double (sometimes you may see a triple, but those are usually on more complex patterns). So your directions are calling for you to stitch the edge that has the double triangles.
Good luck to you!

"Single notched" means there is only one notch. "Double notched" means there is two notches. I assume you know what a notch is. When cutting your pattern, you will see that they tell you to cut a notch here or there, or to make two notches. That is very important!! After that, it all just comes together as planned, and it all makes sense. Sometimes I find I can learn so much just by reading the directions and proceeding step-by-step through the directions. A basic sewing class would really help at this point as well.

The notches denote front and back of the section of the pattern.
For example, a pant front and back look much the same once the pattern has been removed. If you follow the instructions and make tiny snips at each notch, you can easily tell the front (2 notches) from the back (3 notches).

notches help you line up your fabric pieces before sewing. On a sleeve, you will have a single notch - which will be the front of the sleeve- and a double notch- which will be the back of the sleeve. the arm hole with have a single and double notch- you line them up
most pattern piece with have them. double notch is usually always the back of the piece.
go get a sewing book for beginners from your library. one with photos would help the most. it should have sewing terms in it
