I would like to crochet or knit a saints afghan for a friend of mine who loves the saints but since a car accident at the end of the last season has been in an almost completely vegetative state, hes starting to make some progress and I'd really like to make one that would hopefully work up pretty quick... I have found a few charts on google for the fleur de lis but I am pretty new to crocheting and I have no idea how to turn that into an afghan or decent sized throw... one of the charts http://0.tqn.com/d/knitting/1/0/Z/I/-/-/saints-chart.jpg

I'm a knitter so my answer's going to be to your knit question :) another way you could incorporate this design is to knit/crochet your throw completely using whichever pattern you were going to use then using either duplicate stitch or embroidery go back and stitch the fleur-de-lis pattern.

You could also use the Saint's colors, Black & Gold in 6"x6" alternating blocks and use the opposite color to embroider the outline of the fleur-de-lis on each block. Remember to knit a border around your throw.

You can also knit your pattern in intarsia; youtube has several excellent videos that demonstrate this color changing technique.

Below is a washcloth pattern I was able to find that would work nicely as well and might be the quickest to work up because there's no color change just use different stitches to create the image on your work. I'd probably cast on 169 stitches (I think I have the math correct), knit 6 rows, knit a 5 stitch border then follow the chart as wide as desired to the last 3 stitches adding 2 more stitches to match your beginning border & knit to desired length finishing with a garter border & casting off.

So depending on how much time you have there are a few options. I wish you & your friend well :) Aileen

That chart is a bit different from the actual Saints fleur-de-lis.

What I would do is download knitters graph paper and draw the correct fleur-de-lis on it, then use it for designing an afghan around the motif. There's software you can use to create a close copy of anything. Check the hints on this page: http://domestikgoddess.com/3-easy-ways-to-chart-a-knitting-pattern/

Or if you're going to crochet the afghan, you can use single crochet and regular graph paper.

You could put a large fleur-de-lis in the center and small ones at the four corners. You could do just the center motif and then crochet a deep, deep border around the motif. You can get creative with the placement--the most important thing is the right colors and the right motif.

The knitted fleur-de-lis would be done as intarsia. Knit to the color change, drop the old color and pick up the new by twisting the new yarn around the old. This link from http://www.knittinghelp.com illustrates intarsia: http://www.knittinghelp.com/apps/flash/video_player/play/2/1

The crocheted one is a simple color change. Sc the background color to the first color change on your chart, pull the new color through as the last loop of the last sc of the background color, then sc the correct number of stitches in the first contrasting color (cc1). When you change colors, always make the color change on the last loop of the last sc in the old color.

Or do the center motif in Tunisian crochet/Afghan stitch and cross-stitch the fleur-de-lis motif on, using your chart to go by.

I bought several 3-ring binders to organize all of my computer printout patterns. It's a project to sort them into categories, make labeled dividers, and punch the holes but it's worth it. I have a baker's rack that no longer fits in my kitchen that is now home to all of my knitting supplies. It has a long shelf for my books and binders, two small drawers for odds and ends (like tape measures and ball bands), and room for my baskets of yarn. A bookcase would also do the trick and look nice.

As for me, I use a 3 ring binder also but on a lot of my copies and printed out patterns on the net, I have them in folders. I have folders for Wearable, Thread Crochet, Kitchen, Christmas and so on and so on. All my magazines are in those magazine holders and are labeled. I have about 3 years in one holder and stuff like that. All my leaflets has their own plastic magazine holder and I have them labeled for whatever they are, like, barbie, thead and stuff like that. All my yarn is in plastic containers and are located in our open attic (for the time being). All my finished project are also in plastic containers and labled. The house we own is over 200 years old so their is no closests but I do have a small craft/computer room an dit has a closet. So other then my clothes I do have a box with yarn in it for what I am doing now. In the near future I will ahve my own storage building outside and all my yarn and finished projects will go in their. Which this willleave my attic more then half empty and we do have a large attic.

just find a nice picture of the fleur di lis and enlarge it and center it on a graph, i print over the graph someone mentioned at incomptech.???? .... then do a row count, changing colors from background to fleur di lis,

example:: 35 white, 10 gold, 35 white, ..... count row 1 from right to left and row 2 from left to right.

let me know if you need assistance. see my pics on facebook page A TOUCH OF LOVE.

GOOD LUCK!
