I want a soft, blurred appearance. I was thinking watercolors or a water based acrylic, but I'm not sure if those types of paint are permanent, and I don't want the paint to rub off on my other clothes or my car seats. Is there a type of sealant I can use that won't make the leather feel like plastic?

Tandy's "Cova Color" is an acrylic paint that is designed for leather and it is permanent. I have used it for over 20 years and have no complaints with it at all. It flows on best with a synthetic bristle brush and the one I like best is the "Taklon" bristle and I usually get the American Painter brand brushes. As long as the leather has not been treated with any water repellent products that leave a film of silicone on the surface there should be no problems with the Cova flaking off. I do not normally use a sealant over the Cova because it doesn't need one.

If you go to the Tandy website and check for the store near you, you can call them and have someone answer any questions you have about using their products.

Have fun.

Talk to a tailor that works with leather. There is a special paint used on leather - you can't use just any paint because it will either ruin the leather or peel off quickly.

Your single best source for that info is Tandy Leather, a Fort Worth based company. Charles Tandy started 'suckin' kids in back in the fifties. What a marketing genius ! He sent out free leather tools to the school kids, and enticed them into his stores to purchase leather kits (and more tools!) and had most of the kids around here in the hobby before they knew what hit'em. Google TandyLeather, and you can find a local store or the closest. Call, and ask questions ! Answer IS what they do !

There are special dyes and paints for leather, and one of their agents can tell'ya why. Good luck !

Tandy paints/dyes say only use on veg dyed leather. What can I use on leather that's reclaimed? It's already painted by the manufacturer. I plan to use Angelus preparer first. Will the Tandy products stick to it?
