What will be the functions you expect?

Hand held will not do Morse. You have to have a "key " to do that. What to expect is talk on the frequencies that set is tuned into and whether or not you have passed tests to operate on all of the frequencies that are on the handheld. HAM for over 10 years.

Yes, any amateur radio can transmit Morse code.

Your average handleld doesn't support continuous wave or CW, however you can send Morse code using modulated CW. This is basically sending the sound of Morse Code using FM modulation. You can do this by holding your mic or HT up to the speaker of a CW keyer for example. Many hams do this to learn and practice Morse code over 2-meters. It is interesting that you can actually send a perfectly readable signal using modulated CW under conditions that will not support an understandable voice transmission.

Yes you can do CW with your HT as NF7J stated earlier, you can build a little project box and then wire it into your microphone input then use a key of you choice depending on the box you have built and then begin transmitting CW. Many clubs and other hams use this to practice code with and it is a good way to get others interested also, I have built 4 of these boxes and practice code with my 3 kids who buy the way are general class operators and they got their tickets the old fashion way being able to do 13wpm easy. But enough about that, it is a great way to practice and to get others involved, also to setup a schedule with others as previously stated CW does travel farther than voice, you would be surprised at who you could pick up. The expected functions you would find on a handheld would be FM transmission, maybe CW Id-er on some of the newer ones also APRS capability. But your imagination is your limit to what you can do, remember ham radio is a hobby and for some of use we also are involved in emergency management work, but first and foremost it was a hobby first and still is so have fun with it. Yes by useing the transmit button u can tap out a sort of Morse Code signal. ...like SOS.....3 long pushes, 3 short, then 3 long......Has been used many times in Sea and Aero Crashes .......thats the only way.

Unless you make up a Expensive CW Transmiter to add to the Hand Helds System.

Handheld ham radios are designed just for voice; if you want to use CW on the bands that handhelds use, you need an "all-mode" radio, bigger and more expensive. You'd also probably need a better antenna system. There are certain parts of the 2M and 23CM band set aside for CW and other modes, including satellite work, but handhelds generally can't do that.

First of all, I have never tried it, but I think it can be done. I think that you will need a paddle setup that creates its own carrier. Then hook it up to the microphone jack, and transmit code on FM.

Remember, the question was "Can you do Morse code ..." Nothing was said about the mode.
