I'm looking for a good light weight yarn for crochet and I keep coming across DK. Since I don't knit, I'm not sure what that means. Can someone translate?

A DK weight or Light worsted yarn is between a sport weight yarn and worsted weight yarn.

The crochet gauge using hook 7 to I-9 is 12-17 single crochet stitches.

DK is a UK (and maybe Australia - but not sure on that) weight of yarn ... it is equivalent to 2 strand of 3 ply baby yarn

many many moons ago 3ply was the normal weight of yarn and referred to and knitting yarn - so when 2 strands were used the term DK (double knitting) was used

usually knitted on UK size 10 for welt and 8 for main part

look on www.yarnforward.com there are loads of comparison charts on there - very useful

Double knit or DK weight is heavier than sportweight and lighter than worsted weight. Here are the guage ranges for a 4" st st swatch. "# of sts" is the number of stitches in 4 inches. # of sts 27-29(Fingering Weight) 24-26(Sport Weight) 21-23(DK Weight) 19-20(Worsted Weight)

Double Knitting yarn is a worseted weight yarn, if you are looking for a light weight yarn use sport weight or a baby yarn and remember to check your tension...

I believe it is a lighter weight yarn. If your not sure. Just look on any search engine, Google is very good. And just put DK yarn in there, and it should come up with what it is. You can also put in DK yarn definition. Hope this helps you.

If you go to this site:

http://www.knittersreview.com/article_tool.asp?article=/review/profile/050818_d.asp there is a lovely chart near the bottom that explains the range for weights of yarn. It is, as others have said, a little lighter than worsted weight - a little heavier than sport weight. Since the chart only includes US knitting needle sizes, here is a site that gives a bunch of conversion charts so you can figure out what size hook to use: http://www.sweaterbabe.com/NeedleConversion.htm

A hand-made blanket is a very special gift for any baby, and crocheting is a lovely way to make one. Crochet a baby blanket for a baby shower gift or for your own baby using one of these methods
