single needle knitting?

What is it called to knit with only one needle?
I have seen this in movies and on commercials, where people are knitting but only using one knitting needle but I can not find a how to anywhere.
I thought it might be easier to find an on line tutorial if I knew what the actual technique was called.
If anyone knows what this is called, or has a link to an on line tutorial I would appreciate it.
What I am looking for is not crochet, they are not using a crochet hook to do this. Only a single knitting needle.
Thanks for your help.

This is called Tunisian knitting or the afghan stitch. It is very easy to learn and great for making squares to be joined later. It is usually done first and embroidered on with a cross stitch.

Here is a link for you to look at.

While an afghan crochet hook looks very much like a knitting needle, as does a double-ended crochet hook, unless you are seeing a circular knitting needle which has points at both ends of a long cable, you aren't looking at knitting.

Circular knitting needles can be used just like straight needles to knit a flat piece, one simply turns the needles and exchanges the tips in one's hands at the end of the row. Or they can be used to knit tubes like sweater bodies, hats, sleeves, socks and such, by simply knitting around and around just as you do on double pointed needles. In doing this you do need to know where the beginning and end of a round is, usually done by putting a stitch marker between the first and last stitch. You must also be absolutely sure that your stitches are not twisted around the needle on the cast on row before you join the work or you end up with what is called a moebuis, or a circle with a twist in it. The only way to fix this one is to rip out and start over again.

I have been knitting for 40 years and have never heard of single needle knitting. I think what they are using is a large crochet hook that has an end like a knitting needle.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

I'm really not sure what you could mean, unless you mean knitting with a circular needle, like this: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques

I am the member of an lj knitting community, here: http://community.livejournal.com/20sknitters/

They might be able to help you, theres a lot of knitters there from all over the place and they are extremely helpful, but you would have to sign up for livejournal to post a question there.
